Day 68: Worship Lite Syndrome

Posted by undergroundchurch on September 17, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • When was the last time you lifted your hands in worship in a public setting? or even a private setting?
  • When was the last time you were speechless because of the presence of God?
  • When was the last time you cried before the Lord, not because you needed something, but just because you couldn’t find the words to show how much you loved him?
  • When was the last time you danced before the Lord?
  • When was the last time you sang to the Lord without a tape, CD or song leader?
  • When was the last time you fell down prostrate before the Lord?

If you have not done any of the above in a while or have never done some or any of them, you could be suffering from a syndrome known as “Worship Lite”.

You know, the primary words we translate as “worship” in Scripture mean to fall down prostrate, to bow, to kiss the hand, to fear, to tremble, to confess, to profess, to exalt, to lift up, to abase oneself, and to bless.

Worship Lite Syndrome is diagnosed through its symptoms. Thoughts like, “I’m content with my worship experience”, “I don’t want people to think I’m weird”, “Lifting hands is something kids do”, “My worship experience is limited to the 20 minutes we sing on a Sunday morning” are all early signs the the syndrome is taking hold.

Worship is always a “verb”.  It reflects your understanding, attitude, feelings and emotions in the presence of an awesome God.  Worship has no limits. The worship experience never ceases. It is only bound by the limitations of our pride.

Treatments for Worship Lite Syndrome are available through “times set aside each day for worship”, “singing to the Lord in the shower”, “lifting those sweaty hands in a Sunday morning service”, “falling on your face before God because he is God and we are not”. Understanding who He is and what we are in comparison to Him is the first step to a cure.

So go ahead and take a leap. Stretch your worship experience into more than a 20 minute orchestrated experience on a Sunday morning. Break out of the old habits and break into unabridged worship.  You might just find the cure you aren’t even aware you need.

The Perfect Song for Worship

Posted by undergroundchurch on August 14, 2011

An unfortunate side effect of our American definition of worship is that we equate it with music.  However, music is just a tool, albeit an effective tool in conditioning the emotions of the believer to be more in tune to worship God.

If you really look at the words in the songs we use in worship, you will find that most are more about us or about what God does for us or relate to God in a second or third person and really promote deeper worship.

All that said, there come songs every so often that are excellent for worship.  I personally prefer “free worship” songs, which are songs that don’t follow written music, but allow the Spirit of God to lead the worshiper in the experience.

But if you need a worship song that is about as good as they come that follows a standard written pattern, this is the song for you.

Here are the reasons why I would qualify this as the “perfect” song for worship.

  1. The music is emotionally stirring. (Don’t let anyone fool you, the music has to stir our hearts.)
  2. It looks at God and man and compares his awesome nature to man’s and God wins.
  3. It reflects the only place where worship can occur… in His presence.
  4. The Chorus beautifully wraps the idea of the importance of the presence of God concisely
  5. The bridge is exceptional.  It can be, and is, repeated and repeated and repeated in a time of powerful worship where it is just you and God with you just telling him how, beautiful, marvelous, glorious, matchless in every way he is.
  6. The words are written to God, not about God or about what we can get from God.
  7. It is all about Him.
Found in Your hands, fullness of joy
Every fear suddenly wiped away here in Your presence
All of my gains now fade away
Every crown no longer on display, here in Your presence
Heaven is trembling in awe of Your wonders
The kings and their kingdom arestanding amazedChorus:
Here in Your presence, we are undone
Here in Your presence, Heaven and Earth become one
Here in Your presence, all things are new
Here in Your presence, everything bows before You

Bridge:
Wonderful, beautiful, glorious, matchlessin every way
Wonderful, beautiful, glorious, matchlessin every way

Day 50: Worship Thought – “Personal”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 19, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

Most worship Christians experience is corporate. By our design, we promote times of corporate worship without a whole lot of discipleship on how one should cultivate personal worship.

Worship is first and foremost – personal!

The ideal setting for intimate worship is one-on-one time with God. Jesus tells us to “pray in your closet, and the Father who sees what you do in secret will reward you” (Mat 6:6)

The practice of personal worship is key to deeper experiences in corporate settings. The corporate worship experience should be an overflow of the personal times you spend with God on a daily basis and not the fuel for doing personal worship.

Keys to developing personal worship:

  1. Make the time, don’t wait for free time.
  2. Read your Bible – the word of God, buried in your heart, becomes the fuel for the Holy Spirit to speak to you
  3. Listen – Don’t do all the talking, listen for the voice of God – He still speaks in still small voices.
  4. Don’t worship to receive from God, worship to give to God.

Always remember that you have everything you need to worship God if you come to him with faith and a humble heart. (music is NOT required)

Day 49: Worship Thought – “Passion”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 18, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

There is a word used over and over to define a biblical relationship with God – “know”.

This word is poorly understood to be a “knowledge”. The word actually is the same word that refers to the intimacy of a husband and wife in the marriage bed. There is no stronger word that reflects the depth of human relationship than the biblical understanding of “knowing” God.

This word should breathe into our worship several factors:

  • passion – governs the depth of the experience between the lover and the loved
  • desire – is the drawing together of two hearts so that when they are separated for any length of time, the longing to be together cause the ones separated to ache for each other.
  • intimacy – is the focus between the lovers so that all the outside commotion, influences and trappings fade as they are lost in each other’s embrace.

Paul takes this to a whole new level when in Philippians 3:10 “I want to know Christ in the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings“.

Day 48: Worship Thought – “Sweet Release”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 17, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

Where response to the holiness of God is trembling and awe, the response to the beauty of God is sweet release.

It has been said, “It is better to love and lost than never to have loved”, but I think is is best said, “It is best to be loved and know that you will never be unloved.”

Worship that touches the heart of God echoes back a strong sense of release… release from the cares of this world, release from the fear that comes from living in a dying world, release from a heart the is oppressed, release from temptations, struggles, doubts, despair and hopelessness.

If we try to gain release outside of our relationship with God built on our worship of God, we build on foundations that will crumble.

Sweet release is not about “loving yourself more”; it is about “dying to yourself more and allowing God to release the Holy Spirit to live in you more.”

Day 47: Worship Thought – “Reckless Abandon”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 16, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

I’m thinking right now that this is the possible theme for the summer session of Sunday morning class. Pastor suggested that we read a book called “Radical” by David Platt about a month and a half ago, and I have… oh, my!

In worship, reckless abandon is flipping the tables on what you think worship is and worshiping God the way God wants to be worshiped.

Reckless abandon says,

  • “I’m not ashamed of God, and will dance like David danced and not worry about those around me.”
  • “I will lift my hands when prompted by the Holy Spirit and not worry about what the guy sitting behind me thinks”.
  • “I will run to the front of the auditorium and fall on my face before God in front of the stage and totally abase myself so that God may be exalted”.
  • “I will think only of being with God and not be concerned with how well I sing, that I get the words to the song right, that I stand, sit or kneel because that’s what people expect”.
  • “I will die to myself so that I might live for Christ!”

Reckless abandon is the call of the humble, the duty of the called and act of the chosen.

Day 46: Worship Thought – “Outside the Box”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 15, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

If I say the word “worship”, usually the first thing to come to mind is singing and music. While singing and music can help one worship, they are only tools.

I once told someone that knew he sung off-key, “you sing like an angel”. I went on to point out that no place in scripture indicates angels sing. The are only ever recorded “Speaking”; even the angels around God’s throne only speak their worship.

Music, as many scholars point out, is a human method of worship, but it is not the only way to give worship to God.
Some other expressions can be found in scripture… Dancing, shouting, tearing garments, meditation, prophesying, gifts (offerings of sacrifice where you lose that which you give), dedication to the Lord (where you give something to the work of ministry) – neither of these last two include tithe.

Most methods of worship reflected the gift the worshiper had. So what gifts/talents did God give you?

Are you artistic, then paint a picture for the Lord – and don’t sell it for profit.

Is it writing, then write without seeking profit.

Whatever gift you have, find a way to use it for glorifying God without receiving anything in return, then look for new ways to worship the lord in everything and with every breath you have – Psalm 150

Day 45: Worship Thought – “Quality Time”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 14, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

Time is like land, there is only so much you can use for one purpose before everything else suffers.

The question you must ask is not “how much time do you devote to worship” but “what is the best quality time I have in my day, and how can I devote that to God”?

Remember Cain and Abel. Cain brought some of his harvest, Abel brought his worship from the “best” or first of the flock. Both of them spent time bringing the worship, but only Abel brought the best quality and right type, and his was accepted.

We can’t “fit” time with God into our schedule. We need to make room in our schedule for God.

Day 44: Worship Thought – “Holy”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 13, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily DevotionScriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

There is only one target to aim for in worship – recognizing the holiness of God. Anything else is not complete. There is no thought deeper, no worship greater, no moment more intense than the recognition that God is holy and nothing else is like him.

This song always reminds me of the holiness of God…

Day 43: Worship Thought – “Sacrifice”

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 12, 2011

Scriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion

Scriptural Nuggets Daily Devotion You will be hard pressed to find even one moment of worship in scripture that didn’t cost the worshiper something.

Many of David’s psalms, even though written after the fact, came as a result of some spiritual struggle, hardship, of physical pain.

The only OT proclaimed method of worship was sacrifice and complete obedience – not to mention the early mornings, late nights and occasional torn clothing.

Sacrifice, by definition, means that the worshiper loses the thing sacrificed, so why do we think our worship should not cost us something?

Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commandments”.

That means that we do it his way and not ours. It is God we are pleasing in our worship, not ourselves. So I guess the question to ask is, what kind of worship does God desire from me, and then don’t presume you know the answer. As soon as you think you know, that’s where the depth of your worship ends.
