Image and Song

Posted by undergroundchurch on October 20, 2009

I think in pictures and sound.

I love to write, but I tend to read slow because the words slowly absorb into my mind in order to be converted to images.  The process takes a considerable amount of time, hence the reading issues.

Songs work in the same manner, only they tend to drive deep inside my core. I don’t process them as slowly, but I dotend to go into “loop” mode.  I define loop mode as a meditative thinking process.  I grab a key phrase, sound or concept in the song and simply repeat it indefinitely in my cranial cavity.

These wonderfully abstract methods of interpretive perception pose no real challenge until they combine.  For example, when I watch a musical on TV, loads of emotions flood my soul to the point that my kids make fun of me.

“Dad, are you crying again?”

I wipe the tears away discreetly and mumble, “No.”

Of course, the evidence disproves my futile attempt at redeeming my manhood, but I can’t avoid the inevitable – Image and Song speak to me.

This might explain why worship effects me the way it does.  This morning, on the way to work, I listened to a song over and over until I arrived, and then once there, looked for the video on Youtube so that I could satisfy the image component and thus be thoroughly satisfied.  I found it and placed it at the end of this article for you enjoyment.

The simplicity of the song and the video might fool you, but the power in the simple words and the simple ease with which the singers build the song in a gentle yet driving fashion embed the thought in your heart – “I will Exalt You”.

The angels stand around the throne of God day and night uttering the phrase, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come” (Revelation 4:8). That’s it! And they never get bored?  God’s awesome nature must exhibit some serious power if it keeps these creatures in a mode of repetitive worship day and night.

Anyway, this post just rambles on, so without further ado, the video:  Watch it, Listen to it, feel the words, listen again and close your eyes and meditate upon the Lord, the maker of the heavens and the earth and all that is in them.  He was, is and is to come!

Some Great Old Routines

Posted by undergroundchurch on July 11, 2009

I grew up listening to a group called Isaac Air Freight.  They had some great routines.  I since lost the albums, but I found the routines on Youtube the other day.  They are only audio, but that was how they were intended. They are good, even today. Hope you enjoy.

You can see more at the source in Youtube by clicking HERE.

Noisy Worship

Posted by undergroundchurch on April 16, 2009

I have always loved trusting the Bible over tradition.  Tradition tends to change and morph the original intent into a strong force too often bent against the very thing it tries to uphold.

Take Angels for example. We exalt these wonderful beings to a level not given by God.  Many have prayed to them, some have been “sainted”, others become statues that adorn our homes and cars.  But Biblically speaking, they are only servants like us – only they live in heaven.

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!” – Revelation 22:8,9

John found out what angels think of these misdirected acts of worship.  But have you ever wondered how angels really worship?

First of all, they can’t sing.  OK, so they might could sing, but there is no scripture in the bible that mentions any angel ever singing.  “Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing ov’r the plains” never happened. (See Luke 2:13,14) They speak, but they don’t sing.

Actually, you might describe them as rather “noisy”.  Think about it.  What kind of noise bothers you the most.  For me, it’s a constant drumming, repeating sound.  A child saying, “mommy, mommy, mommy, mommy, infinitum” can really get on your nerves.

Guess what the angels closest to God say, day and night. “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come” (Revelation 4:8) over and over and over and… well you get the picture.

No beautiful music, just angels speaking – making noise — Making a joyful noise.

Ok, so let me try this one on you.  Remember in the Psalm where David pens the words, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord” (Psalm 98:4) What if David actually was on to something there.  Not the music we are so acustom to hearing, but the meditative sound of words being spoken in worship to the Lord.

Have you ever wanted to worship the Lord like an angel?  If you want to find out what that is like, you gotta start like an angel starts – long, repetative, non-music lyrics of noise.

With this in mind, think about all those people in church that struggle to carry a tune.  You know who you are.  You are the ones who can’t carry a tune in a bucket.  Well your redemption is here!  You my friends are the only angelic voices in the entire congregation on a Sunday morning.

Therefore, speak  up, speak loud and let the monotone noise proceed from your lips with harmony only angels can relate to and God loves
