Day 57: My Top 10 – No. 10

Top ten Scriptures for me. Number 10.

Deuteronomy 6:4–¬†Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.

This Scripture is affectionately known as the shema. It is the passage that was written and placed in phylacteries on a Hebrew’s forehead or on the doorposts of the house. ¬†It is the one Scripture that reminded them that God was one.

What is interesting is that even in this verse, the pluralistic-singularity of God is displayed.

The proper name for the Lord is used twice in this passage, which is singular. However, the name for “God” in the verse is the plural elohim, which literally means “Gods”.

The verse could just as easily read, “Hear O Israel, the Lord your Gods is one Lord”.

Later we find out just what he means when the God of heaven sent his one and only who was both very God and very man. This Jesus proclaimed that he and the Father were one (John 10:30), and yet, they were not (Matthew 7:21). God is one, yet plural, yet one.

I love it when a Scripture comes together.

Day 56: Secret Men – Part 2

Posted by undergroundchurch on June 18, 2011

Jude 4 –¬†For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about¬†long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

2 Peter 2:1 –¬†But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them‚ÄĒbringing swift destruction on themselves.

In the first century, the destructive elements brought into the church by “secret men” were based in two things:

  1. They were turning the grace of God into license for immorality, and
  2. They were denying that Jesus Christ is the only way

Denying Jesus

During our son’s high school graduation, a prayer was prayed to someone called, “Creator”. ¬†The scope of the prayer could very easily include everyone from Jesus to the spirit wind of the Mojave desert. ¬†It was a brief moment of acknowledgement that something or someone bigger than us is out there, but since we aren’t sure, will pray to the “unknown god” –¬†Acts 17:23¬†

There is a reason that the Bible gets very specific to say things like,

  • “Everyone who calls on the¬†name¬†of the Lord will be¬†saved”¬†– Romans 10:13
  • “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other¬†name¬†under heaven given to mankind by which we must be¬†saved.” – Acts 4:12
  • Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the¬†name¬†of¬†Jesus¬†Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. – Acts 2:8
  • It is by the¬†name¬†of¬†Jesus¬†Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. – Acts 4:10
  • But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the¬†name¬†of the Lord¬†Jesus¬†Christ and by the Spirit of our God. – 1 Corinthians 6:11
  • Therefore God exalted him to the highest place¬†and gave him the name that is above every name,¬†that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,¬†in heaven and on earth and under the earth,¬†and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,¬†to the glory of God the Father. – Philippians 2:9-11

It is the oldest attack against the church, “Don’t preach or speak in the name of Jesus” (Acts 4:18)

There is only one way, one truth, one life. There is only one gate to God and it goes through the cross of Jesus Christ.  If we believe the Bible, then there is no other way.  If we discount everything the Bible says about salvation and the hope we have in Christ, then we can just pray to the unknown creator and hope it all works out in the end.

Day 55: Secret Men – Part 1

Fast forward 1900 years.

I hear less from preachers, teachers and “Christian” books dealing with sin and see more and more that try to make people feel better about themselves. ¬†A byproduct of a repentant heart before God recognizes the battle with sin in believers’ lives and does not try to “feel better” about one’s own self. ¬†Repentance says, “I am a dirty rotten sinner in need of a savior.”

There is nothing in us worthy… only Christ. Sin must be purged from our lives. ¬†Immorality is a sin that, as Paul says, “we sin against our own body” (1 Corinthians 6:17).

The more immoral the world around the church becomes, the bigger the separation the church must take from society.  We can be and should be culturally relevant, but we must not become culturally related.

Unfortunately, immorality is prevalent in the church and the lines between the world and the church are becoming increasingly blurred.  It is time to call out sins of immorality and clean up the church before God steps in and does it for us. I can assure you that it is better to repent and resolve that, which we know we must fix rather than wait for God to become intolerant of the sin in his church and  1 Peter 4:17

For it is time for judgment to begin with God’s household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God?

Day 54: Fatherly Compassion

Posted by undergroundchurch on June 16, 2011

‚ÄúAs a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;‚Ä̬†Psalm 103:13¬†NIV

Sadly, many people cannot relate to this Scripture. If you did not have a compassionate father, I can understand where you may skip over this, but there is something important in this passage that gives greater understanding about God and how fathers should act.

Fear the Lord

The problem with understanding the “fear of the Lord” is that too many feared their fathers out of real fear for their own lives. ¬†They feared the backhand, the fist, the drunkenness, the yelling and fights. ¬†However, that type of fear is not the kind of fear we should have of the Lord.

The fear of the Lord is trembling, awe and reverence for a holy God that with a mere thought can remove you from this world.  However, it is the love and compassion of the Lord that produces the patience He has with us, which in turn gives us assurance that He truly loves us.  This patience is not shown to give us permission to sin but to allow Him to work in us to deliver us out of dependence on sin.

His holiness produces in us a fear of the Lord, but his compassion frees us to boldly come before him still trembling yet knowing that He accepts us.

Fatherly Compassion

Fathers in this world need to draw on God’s example of Fatherly Compassion.

Our kids are a treasure, but sometimes they can be a bit of a handful. ¬†We can be very upset with some acts in them. ¬†However, when this happens, it is important to keep in mind God’s approach with us and then¬†emulate¬†it.

  1. Show the error, yet show more love before, during and after correction
  2. Show more love than disappointment
  3. You are a Father first, but don’t forget that you are the reason your kids are here.
  4. Your job is to train them up in the Lord to reflect the life and love of Christ. The best way to do that is show them love like Jesus does.
