Day 6: Foundational Indicators of a Christ Follower

Foundational Indicators of a Christ Follower

Seven basic indicators exist in a follower of Christ.  These indicators reveal themselves as the believer transitions from the acquaintance mode, where they recognize a need for a savior and meet the savior, to the follower mode, where they begin to take on the habits of the Messiah that saved them.

The follower of Christ wants to emulate Christ in action and deed, not just word.  In other words, they walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

A follower of Christ may not be the person saved for the longest period of time.  Don’t make “time” a factor in recognizing a follower of Christ.  The quality of the relationship counts more than the length of time they carry the label “Christian”.

These indicators all start with the believer’s desire to implement them, and when implemented, only show that the foundation exists.  Paul (1 Cor 3:2), Peter (1 Pet 2:2) and the writer of Hebrews (Heb. 5:12) call this the “milk” stage.  The milk provides necessary nutrients for a good start as a follower of Christ, but more solid food must be added for real growth to occur. That subject comes in tomorrow’s devotion.

The indicators:

  1. Hunger for the Word of God –  Reading the Bible for the purpose of applying its principles
  2. Passion for His presence – Prayer
  3. Desire to be with other believers on a consistent basis – consistent church attendance with additional times with believers thrown in for good measure e.g. home groups, demographic group meetings, etc.
  4. A giving lifestyle – money, time and other material possessions on a consistent basis
  5. A servant’s heart – loving one another, serving from a heart of compassion
  6. A righteous attitude –Demonstrating love for God in actions that please him – e.g. avoiding sin, doing good, etc.
  7. Participating as an active member of the Body of Christ – using your gifts in the church

Each of these indicators manifest in some tangible sense, but the key to each lies in the attitude of the heart.  For as Paul tells us in 1 Cor 13, “… if I have not love, I am nothing.”
