Computer Parts of the Spirit: Machine Language

Posted by undergroundchurch on June 2, 2010

Machine language: the core of computing that translates a disk full of ones and zeros into meaningfulactions. When you read a recipe, unless you know what “T”, “t”, “pinch”, “dab” and the dreaded “to taste” are, you will have some interesting concoctions coming from your kitchen.

I recently taught my daughter how to count in binary.  She caught on really quick.  Now I need to teach her how to do masking.  After all, there are only 10 types of people in the world…. those that understand binary and those that don’t.

Your computer knows only two things…1 and 0.  You see applications, operating systems, etc., but what’s really going on is that someone has cleverly taken the 1 and 0 and grouped them together, and made that computer work magic.

The best part of a computer is that you don’t need to understand the base machine language,  you have applications that do that for you, but you do need to know something.  The more you know, the better you are. Understanding is the key to so much in the Kingdom of God.  You get understanding about the Kingdom of God from two sources, prayer and scripture.

You might think that you get understanding from teaching, preaching and the like, but while they are important, you are really only getting the interpretation of someone else’s understanding.

When you get water from your sink, you could say that the sink is the source of your water. However, you need to trace that water even further back through the pipes, towers, pumps and finally that aquifer, river or well to find the real source. The faucet is the last point you see before you get the water.  In the process of getting that water from the sink, you will get added chemicals, rust from the pipes and other outside  contaminates.

Unless you have been to the source and know what good water is, how are you going to know when the water you get at the sink is bad?

Likewise, you have to visit God on your own and read his Word constantly.  You need to dig in for yourself, because if you rely solely on preachers, teachers, books and TV for your spiritual food, and don’t taste of God for yourself, you can be easily led astray.

Machine Language is an extreme example, because there are probably only 10 people in the world that know it.  But there are other layers to a computer system known as the OSI Model.  The deeper you go in the layers, the deeper your understanding of the computer.

The Bible works the same way.  Read a couple different translations, do words studies, learn the language of the Bible, become a student of the Word.

In prayer, spend more time worshiping God and less time asking him for stuff.  Get to know Him on his terms. Then, you will begin to echo Paul’s words,

I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. – Philippians 3:10,11
