Computer Parts of the Spirit: Temporary Media

Posted by undergroundchurch on May 28, 2010

Temporary media: USB flash drives, floppy disks that you can use to transfer data physically to another computer. This is like those times when your grandma hands down that recipe to you because her mom gave it to her.  It doesn’t change, it just keeps going and going… kinda like fruitcake.

The theme for the two letters to the Corinthians is about about the unity in the Body of Christ.  It’s a how-to instruction manual from a church that didn’t know how-to.  The key learning point is that we may be different, with different gifts, passions, drive and focus, but we have a common Spirit that works in all of His members allowing complete harmony.

One feature of the USB drive on a computer is that as long as there is a USB port on the computer, you can copy file between any two computers – PC, IBM, MAC, UNIX, and any other computer platform acronym can transfer information between each other even though the operating systems are not necessarily interchangeable.

One of the problems that we tend to create in our churches comes from our insistence on making everyone think and work the same way.  I understand having a common goal, but we aren’t all made the same.

Paul says it this way,

“The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body… So it is with Christ Now the body is not made up of one part but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason cease to be part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.'” (1 Corinthians 12:12-20).

This means that my gifts, talents and drive aren’t necessarily the same as yours.  In fact, if we both had the same gifting, then one of us would not be necessary.  The common piece is the harmony we have through the unity of Holy Spirit.

Our different gifts allow us to address a much larger area.  When we diminish the importance of some gifts in the church, we limit the potential effectiveness.

I suppose the trick is to learn to show people how to be like Christ, not like me.

  1. pertaining to producing this, It’s actually precisely what I wanted about google. The idea is much rather listen to ideas coming from somebody, as opposed to a corporate website, that’s exactly why I favor weblogs so much. Thanks!
